DESERT HILLS HIGH SCHOOL EXPLANATION OF BLOCK SCHEDULE
Students enjoy greater flexibility with block scheduling and an innovative four-day school week. The block scheduling system consists of four 36-day blocks per school year. During each block, the student takes and completes three or more courses. Each course meets four days a week for one hour and forty-three minutes each day. Students attend school for four mini-semesters. This enables them to earn 6 to 8 credits per year, depending upon which option is chosen. Fridays are dedicated to student services, such as tutoring, testing, conferences, field trips and career-related activities. This system offers students the motivational advantage of being able to earn a positive reward in a shorter amount of time. It also allows the student who has fallen behind to catch up and graduate before the end of the school year.
Desert Hills High School’s program follows a unique block schedule system. During the regular school year we offer four individual blocks as reflected on the school calendar. During each block, the student takes and completes three or more courses (minimum three courses required for full time status). At the end of the block, the earned credit is then applied to the transcript. This system offers the student the motivational advantage of being able to earn a positive reward in a shorter amount of time. It also allows the student who has fallen behind to catch up and graduate on time with their graduation class or even before the end of the school year. Additional work experience credit may be earned for each 128 hours verified by the employer and turned into the registrar (see student handbook for complete requirements).
